Sports Physical Therapy in Waukee

Sports Physical Therapy in Waukee, Iowa

Getting cleared and being ready are two different things. I rehab athletes and active adults against criteria you have to hit, in a gym with the equipment to test them.

Short Answer

Sports physical therapy is rehabilitation built around the demands of your sport, where the discharge decision comes from strength, power, and symmetry testing rather than from a number of weeks. At Fortitude & Freedom Performance Therapy in Waukee, Iowa, Jake Pawol, PT, DPT, OCS runs every session one on one in a fully equipped gym, so a lifter is tested under a barbell and a runner is tested at running loads. Iowa allows direct access, so no physician referral is required.

  • Return to sport decided by testing, not by the calendar
  • Testing matched to your sport, whether that is a barbell or a race
  • One-on-one for the full session, in a real gym
  • No physician referral needed in Iowa
The Difference

Criteria, Not a Calendar

Most rehab plans end on a date. Six weeks, twelve weeks, cleared. The date is easy to administer and it tells you nothing about whether the leg is ready.

I use criteria instead. Before you go back to full training, I want to see quad strength within range of the other side, single leg power that matches, and a movement that holds together when you are tired rather than only when you are fresh. If the numbers are not there, we keep working, and you know exactly which number we are chasing.

That approach cuts both ways, and this is the part athletes like. When the numbers are there early, you go back early. The testing is not a gate designed to keep you out. It is information, and you get to see it.

What This Covers

What Sports Physical Therapy Covers

Different sports break down in different ways, so testing and programming change with the athlete.

Return to Sport After Injury or Surgery

After an ACL reconstruction, a rotator cuff repair, a hamstring tear, or a bad ankle sprain, the gap between cleared and confident is where most people get stuck.

I close it with a testing battery: strength symmetry, hop and jump testing for lower body, loaded pressing and pulling for upper body, and a return to the actual movements of your sport under fatigue. You see your numbers each time we test.

Physical Therapy for Lifters

For a powerlifter or a weightlifter, testing happens under a barbell. I want to see the squat, the hinge, and the press at load, because a knee that feels fine at bodyweight can still fail at 80 percent.

Programming runs alongside your training rather than replacing it. In almost every case we find a variation you can keep loading while the injured tissue heals.

Physical Therapy for Runners

A runner gets tested at running loads. Calf capacity, single leg work, and tolerance to volume tell me far more than a table-based exam.

For Des Moines Marathon and half marathon builds, we plan the return around your training block so the mileage comes back in a shape that holds.

CrossFit and Hybrid Athletes

High volume and high variety means the same shoulder gets asked to press, hang, and catch in one session. That is a durability problem more than a single-injury problem.

Rehab here means finding the position that is failing, restoring it, and then rebuilding capacity in the movements the sport actually asks for.

HYROX and Endurance Racing

Hybrid racing has its own injury pattern, and it comes from the stations that combine load with fatigue.

Prep work targets those stations directly, in the order the race presents them, rather than treating running and lifting as two separate problems.

Youth and High School Athletes

Young athletes get the same criteria-based standard, with programming scaled to training age rather than chronological age.

Parents get the testing numbers too, so a return to the field is a conversation about data instead of a guess.

What to Expect

What a Session Looks Like

One on one with me for the full session, in the gym, with the equipment needed to test what we are talking about.

  1. 1

    A real evaluation

The first visit is a full movement and strength assessment against the demands of your sport. I watch you do the thing that hurts. That is the exam.

  2. 2

    Hands-on where it helps

Manual therapy, dry needling, and mobility work are used when they open a door. They are never the whole session.

  3. 3

    Loading, every visit

Every session includes strength work. The gym is the treatment room, so we can load what we just freed up while it is still free.

  4. 4

    Testing you can see

We retest on a schedule and you see the numbers. That is how the return decision gets made, and how you know the plan is working.

  • Cash-based practice, so the plan is built around what you need rather than what a plan authorizes
FAQ

Common Questions

What is sports physical therapy?

It is physical therapy where the goal is your sport, not just the absence of pain. The exam looks at the movements your sport demands, the rehab happens under load in a gym, and the decision to return is based on strength, power, and symmetry testing rather than on how many weeks have passed.

Do I need a referral to see a sports physical therapist in Iowa?

No. Iowa has had unrestricted direct access to physical therapy since 1988. You can book without seeing a physician first. Call or use the contact page and our team will get you scheduled.

How is this different from regular physical therapy?

Two things. The setting and the standard. Sessions run in a fully equipped gym rather than a treatment room, so a lifter can be tested under a barbell. And the return decision comes from testing numbers you get to see, rather than from a date on a calendar.

When can I go back to my sport?

When you hit the criteria. For most lower body injuries that means strength and single leg power within range of the uninvolved side, and a movement that holds up when you are tired. I will tell you which numbers we are chasing at the first visit, and we retest on a schedule so you can watch them move.

Can I keep training while I rehab?

Almost always. Finding what you can still load is part of the first session. Complete rest is rarely the right answer for an active person, and losing a training block usually costs more than the injury did.

Do you take my insurance?

Fortitude & Freedom is a cash-based practice. That means the plan is built around what you need rather than what a benefit plan authorizes, and you get the full session with me. Use the contact page and our team will walk you through how it works before you book anything.

Do you work with athletes who are not competitive?

Yes, and most of the people I see fit that description. If you train, you are an athlete for the purpose of this work. The testing standard is the same whether you are chasing a state meet or your first half marathon.
