Post-Surgical Rehab in Waukee

Post-Surgical Rehab in Waukee, Iowa

Surgery repairs the tissue. Rehab decides what you can do with it. I take you from the first weeks after an operation all the way back to full training, and I can start before surgery so recovery begins from a better place.

Short Answer

Post-surgical rehab is physical therapy after an operation such as an ACL reconstruction, a meniscus repair, or a rotator cuff repair, that follows your surgeon's protocol and then carries on past it, to full training. At Fortitude & Freedom Performance Therapy in Waukee, Iowa, Jake Pawol, PT, DPT, OCS runs post-surgical rehab and pre-surgical prehab one on one in a fully equipped gym, and decides the return to sport with strength and symmetry testing rather than with a date. Iowa allows direct access, so no physician referral is required.

  • Follows your surgeon's protocol, then carries on to full training
  • Prehab before surgery, so recovery starts from a better place
  • Return to sport decided by testing, not by the calendar
  • One-on-one for the full session, in a real gym
The Difference

Cleared Is Not the Same as Ready

Most post-surgical rehab ends when the protocol ends. The knee bends, the swelling is gone, the visits run out, and you are told you are cleared. Then you try to go back to running, lifting, or your sport, and something does not feel right.

The protocol protects the repair. It does not rebuild the strength, power, and confidence you need for full training. That second part is where most people get stuck, and it is the part I care most about.

So the rehab has two halves. The first follows your surgeon's protocol, step by step. The second carries on past it, with testing that tells us when the leg or the shoulder is ready. You see the numbers each time we test.

What I Treat

What Post-Surgical Rehab Covers

Every operation has its own protocol and its own timeline. The plan follows both, and the end point is always your sport or your training.

ACL Reconstruction

An ACL rehab is long, and the hardest part comes after the knee feels normal. Quad strength and single leg power often lag far behind how the knee feels.

We test both before you go back to cutting, jumping, or heavy lifting, because the return decision should come from the numbers.

Meniscus and Other Knee Surgery

Meniscus repairs and trims, cartilage work, and other knee operations each come with their own limits on load and range.

We follow those limits, then build the knee back up so it can take squats, stairs, and running again.

Rotator Cuff and Shoulder Surgery

Rotator cuff repairs and labral repairs need a patient start, because the repair has to heal before it can be loaded.

After that, the work is strength and range in the positions you need, whether that is pressing a barbell or reaching an overhead shelf.

See the shoulder and elbow pain page

Hip, Ankle, and Other Repairs

Hip arthroscopy, Achilles repairs, ankle stabilization, and other orthopedic operations follow the same approach.

Your surgeon's protocol sets the early limits. Testing decides when you are ready for full training.

Pre-Surgical Prehab

If you have a surgery date, the weeks before it matter. People who go into surgery with better strength and range tend to get it back faster afterward.

Prehab also teaches you the first exercises of your rehab before you need them, so the first weeks after surgery feel familiar.

Blood Flow Restriction Training After Surgery

Early after surgery, the muscle wastes fast and the joint cannot take heavy load yet.

Blood flow restriction training builds strength with light weights, so you lose less muscle while the repair heals.

What a Session Looks Like

One on one with me for the full session, in a gym with the equipment to test and load the repair when it is ready.

  1. 1

    Your surgery and your protocol

Bring your surgeon's protocol and any limits you were given. The first visit sets the plan around them, and around the sport or training you want back.

  2. 2

    Protected early work

The first weeks focus on range, swelling, and muscle activation, with the load your protocol allows.

  3. 3

    Strength, every visit

As the protocol opens up, every session includes strength work. The gym is the treatment room, so we can load the repair as soon as it is ready.

  4. 4

    Testing you can see

We test strength, power, and symmetry on a schedule. That is how the return decision gets made, and you see every number.

FAQ

Common Questions

How soon after surgery can I start physical therapy?

That depends on your operation and your surgeon. Many protocols start physical therapy within the first week or two. Bring your protocol to the first visit and we will follow it.

Do you follow my surgeon's protocol?

Yes. The protocol protects the repair, so the early phase follows it step by step. Where I add value is the later phase, when the protocol is done but you are not yet ready for full training.

Is prehab before surgery worth it?

Yes, when you have the time. Going into surgery with better strength and range usually makes the first weeks after it easier. It also means you learn your first rehab exercises before you need them.

When can I go back to running, lifting, or my sport?

When you pass the testing. For most knee surgeries that means quad strength and single leg power within range of the other side, and a movement that holds up when you are tired. I will tell you which numbers we are working toward, and you see them each time we test.

Do I need a referral for physical therapy after surgery in Iowa?

Iowa has had unrestricted direct access to physical therapy since 1988, so you can book without a referral. After surgery, I still want your surgeon's protocol, so the rehab matches the repair. Call or use the contact page and our team will get you scheduled.

Do you take my insurance?

Yes, in many cases. Fortitude & Freedom is a hybrid practice. We accept Blue Cross Blue Shield and TRICARE, and we offer a cash option for everyone else. Either way you get the full session with me. Use the contact page and our team will confirm your coverage before you book anything.
